Live Attenuated Vaccine
Cautions/Contraindications

  • Under 2 years old or over 50 years old (*)
  • Egg allergy (or hypersensitivity to prior LAIV)
  • Moderate to severe acute febrile illness (but OK to give in face of typical otitis media or URI unless nasal congestion impedes delivery)
  • Pregnancy (*)
  • Asthma, reactive airways disease, or chronic pulmonary or cardiovascular disease (*)
  • Metabolic disease (diabetes), renal dysfunction, or hemoglobinopathy (*)
  • Known or suspected immunodeficiency or taking immunosuppressive drugs (*)
  • Under 18 yrs old and taking long-term salicylate therapy (*)
  • History of Guillain-Barre syndrome
  • Use of influenza antivirals medication within 48 hours prior to vaccination or in the 2 weeks following vaccination
  • Close contact with patient with severe immunodeficiency (ie. hematopoietic stem cell transplants) (*)
