A Step-By-Step Guide

Start with a document
in either Microsoft Word 97 or 2000.

In this example we'll be working with a file called The Elbow which contains peripheral brain style notes about elbow conditions.

Step One: Format with Headings

• Decide which topics within the document you'll want to use as targets for hyperlinks
  

  • typically these are subject headings and sub-headings
    

• Highlight the text for one of these hyperlink targets.
  

• Change the heading by clicking on the drop-down list on the Word toolbar and assigning a heading. 
  

• Assign the headings hierarchically.
  

  • For example, in this document we'll assign :

    • Non-traumatic elbow pain to Heading 2

      • Entrapment Neuropathies to Heading 3

        • Cubital Tunnel Syndrome to Heading 4

      • Lateral Epicondylitis to Heading 3
        

• Each of these headings will be able to be used as the target of a hyperlink in the next step.
